Subject: Call for applications--FAIC Collaborative Workshops Advisory Committee in Photograph Conservation
The FAIC Collaborative Workshops in Photograph Conservation Advisory Committee has a single vacancy for a 2- to 4-year term. The Committee is charged with the programing and management of the workshop series and this position offers an exceptional way to serve the field, reflect on growing trends, analyze needs, respond to challenges, work in collaboration, connect globally, and think creatively. Committee members must commit to a minimum of one conference call meeting per month (typically an hour on the last Friday of each month) as well as providing input, ideas, and advice regarding workshop topics, faculty, and content. AIC / PMG members with an interest in this position, should contact the Advisory Committee Chair, Sylvie Penichon (sylvie.penichon<-at->cartermuseum<.>org by June 30, 2013. Nominees will stand for a general PMG election taking place electronically over a two-week period during the summer. The successful candidate will be announced in the Specialty Group Columns of AIC News Online. Background: In 2009, the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation was awarded $1,000,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to establish an endowment to support workshops in photograph conservation. Endowment earnings are used toward creating three workshops every two years, two hands-on workshops for smaller groups and one lecture-based workshop geared toward a larger audience. The primary goal of the workshops is addressing emerging needs in the field of photograph conservation, including the characterization and study of traditional photographic processes as well as the preservation and identification of digital prints and other new media. The workshops build on the already established model of the Mellon Collaborative Workshops while taking advantage of the structure of AIC, including the participation of their qualified staff as well as their established contacts in conservation and allied fields. In addition, FAIC is contributing close to $100,000 every two years in matching funds. Core members of the Committee are Debra Hess Norris, Chair and Professor, Art Conservation, University of Delaware; Nora W. Kennedy, Sherman Fairchild Conservator of Photographs, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Stephanie Lussier, Director of Education and Training, AIC Board; and Eric Pourchot, Director of Professional Development, FAIC. In addition to these members, the Photographic Materials Specialty Group is charged with selecting three advisors serving two- to four-year terms. Current elected members are Sylvie Penichon (Chair), Paul Messier, and Luisa Casella. Paul Messier will be rotating off the committee. We are grateful to him for his four years of service and constant good ideas.
