The Methone Archaeological Project, located in northeastern Greece,
is offering an archaeological conservation internship opportunity
for the 2013 season (August 5-September 13, 2013).

The project is directed by Dr. John Papadopoulos and Dr. Sarah
Morris of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA, in
conjunction with archaeologists from the Greek Archaeological
Service. The site of ancient Methone is situated in northern Greece
near Thessaloniki. Small-scale excavations were conducted by the
Greek Archaeological Service in 2003 in order to establish the
precise location of the ancient city.  These excavations uncovered
evidence of occupation at the site from the Neolithic period through
the 4th century BC.

The Methone Archaeological Project was initiated in 2012 to continue
archaeological investigations at the site.  The first phase of the
project is to document, conserve and study the material excavated so
far before any survey work or further excavations of the site take
place. Work in the conservation lab this season (2013) will be a
continuation of activities that took place last summer focusing on
the conservation of the metallic finds (copper alloy, iron and lead)
primarily found in the agora and city fortifications. Last summer,
pXRF analysis of metal and glass artifacts was also undertaken by
conservation staff, and that work may be continuing this season as
well.

The Archaeological Conservation Intern will work under the
supervision of the 2 Field Conservators and gain experience in the
examination, documentation, analysis, and conservation of the
metallic finds from Methone.

Applicants interested in the position should be currently enrolled
in a graduate conservation program, or equivalent, or be a recent
graduate. Applicants with previous field experience in the
conservation of archaeological metals are preferred.  The internship
runs for the full season, but the length of the internship and dates
