Subject: Studentship at University College London
Studentship University College London AHRC Studentship: Colour in the New Kingdom Town: the Technology of Painted Vernacular Architecture at Amara West and Tell el-Amarna, and its Implications. Applications are invited for a three year PhD studentship offered as an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award between the British Museum and the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. The studentship will address unresolved questions about the production, procurement and use of materials in ancient Egyptian painting through study and comparison of vernacular painting from Tell el-Amarna, Egypt and current British Museum excavations at Amara West, Sudan. By comparing the materials and techniques used in the core and periphery of the Empire, the student will achieve an improved understanding of craft tradition and organisation and relate this to the social and economic structures of the period. The student will participate in fieldwork projects to collect samples for analysis or undertake measurements in the field. In the UK their time will be divided between the Institute of Archaeology, UCL and the British Museum, and they will apply techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and polarised light microscopy to characterise the painting materials and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the identification of binders. Full training and supervision in the analytical techniques used, together with any necessary guidance and training in Egyptology and archaeological theory, will be provided. Applications are welcome from candidates with training in arts- or science-based aspects of archaeology, conservation or heritage science. The deadline for application is 24 May 2013.
