The Conservation of In-Situ Archaeological Mosaic Floors Chris Cleere Fishbourne Roman Palace June 25-27, 2013 The Sussex School of Archaeology is pleased to announce a brand new course and exciting opportunity to study up close, the famous mosaics at Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex. This unique opportunity to train under renowned conservator Chris Cleere, will include direct access to the mosaics, entry to the Palace, two days of practical and theory workshops at Fishbourne and also visiting the newly re-opened Roman villa at Chedworth in Gloucestershire. The course aims to explore the development of the approach to conservation and presentation of in-situ preserved archaeological mosaics in the UK from the mid nineteenth century until the present. A visit to Chedworth Roman Villa will be included in the course to allow comparison between the 1960's shelter structure at Fishbourne Roman Palace and the recently opened shelter structure of the Chedworth Roman Villa West Range within the context of historical and current archaeological site conservation and presentation values. The course will comprise both tutorial sessions and practical sessions that include involvement in the development and implementation of a conservation condition survey for the mosaics at Fishbourne Roman Palace. The cost, which includes entry to Fishbourne Palace and Chedworth is only UKP120. Students can make their own travel arrangements to Chedworth or can book a place on a first come first served basis on a mini-bus at an additional cost of UKP10 per. person.
