Subject: Symposium on furniture
Symposium "Furniture: making and meaning?" Hochhauser Auditorium Sackler Centre V&A 17 May 2013 To celebrate the opening of the V&A's new Dr. Susan Weber Gallery of Furniture, we are holding a one-day symposium on 17 May 2013 to investigate furniture materials, making and design. Looking at the relationships between materials, techniques, and a wider culture of use, the symposium will address questions of technological development, adaptation, trade and cross-cultural exchange. It will include two sessions in which a conservator and a curator examine in detail an object from the collection. Other papers will address the history of materials such as 18th-century French furniture woods, 19th century shagreen and 20th century plywood. The day will finish with a panel discussion in which leading contemporary furniture makers discuss the relationship between design and making. A full programme is attached, bookings can be made via the V&A's website: <URL:http://www.vam.ac.uk/whatson/event/2294/furniture-making-and-meaning-3574/> Elizabeth Bisley Assistant Curator Furniture, Textiles and Fashion Department Victoria and Albert Museum +44 20 7942 2677 *** Conservation DistList Instance 26:46 Distributed: Sunday, April 21, 2013 Message Id: cdl-26-46-018 ***Received on Friday, 19 April, 2013
