"Furniture: making and meaning?"
Hochhauser Auditorium
Sackler Centre
17 May 2013

To celebrate the opening of the V&A's new Dr. Susan Weber Gallery of
Furniture, we are holding a one-day symposium on 17 May 2013 to
investigate furniture materials, making and design.

Looking at the relationships between materials, techniques, and a
wider culture of use, the symposium will address questions of
technological development, adaptation, trade and cross-cultural
exchange. It will include two sessions in which a conservator and a
curator examine in detail an object from the collection. Other
papers will address the history of materials such as 18th-century
French furniture woods, 19th century shagreen and 20th century
plywood. The day will finish with a panel discussion in which
leading contemporary furniture makers discuss the relationship
between design and making.

A full programme is attached, bookings can be made via the V&A's
