Treating Sheet Lead A colleague who is not on the DistList would like to confer with a conservator about treatment options for a work by Jasper Johns, entitled "Bread." Issued in 1969 as an edition of 60 and 10 artists proofs, it consists of a painting on paper of a slice of bread that is affixed to a background of sheet lead. The piece in question has a number of indentations and scratches in the lead that are felt to impair or impact the aesthetics of the piece. I am interested in learning if anyone has or knows of someone with experience with this work or with remediating scratches and indentations on sheet lead.
