Paper Conservator East Riding of Yorkshire Archives and Local Studies Service Salary: UKP UKP21,519, annual Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week. some evenings Contract type: Permanent. We are looking for a Conservator who specialises in flat items for an exciting opportunity in a spacious well-equipped lab. The conservator will treat a wide variety of paper and parchment materials, including manuscripts, maps, architectural plans and photographs. The repair of wax seals and rehousing documents are a part of this role. He or she will participate in outreach activities such as tours, tutorials for the public and designing an occasional exhibit, as well as supporting our preservation program through environmental monitoring and surveys. The training and supervision of volunteers will be shared by working together with the Senior Conservator. We accept treatments for income, so the conservator will also be handling their own estimates and some deadline work. He or she will be expected and encouraged to keep up with new research in the field. We prefer a paper conservator with an open attitude toward lifelong learning, who is intrigued by new challenges, and who is hopefully excited about map repair. Qualifications Graduate degree in conservation from a recognized training program or equivalent in practical experience Treatment experience in the conservation of paper- and parchment- based items, preferably but not necessarily in an archive or library conservation department Ability to safely handle rare and fragile materials and to work with small tools with accuracy and precision Knowledge of documentation procedures including digital photography Understanding of and adherence to the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of paper and parchment items, and the substances used to treat them Ability to work as part of a small and friendly team Ability to work for extended periods standing, to lift moderately heavy boxes and to tolerate moderate levels of dust Please note: At the interview, candidates will be asked to present a portfolio of their work to the search committee.
