We are seeking a Book and Paper Conservator to join the Collection
Care Team at The Alexander Turnbull Library. The team of 15 includes
specialist conservators in books, paper, photographs, audio visual
media and sound recordings as well as technicians, collections
registrar and library assistants.  The Turnbull Library is New
Zealand's pre-eminent research library with extensive collections
including books, manuscripts, sound recordings, drawings, paintings,
prints maps, ephemera and digital media. It forms part of the
National Library of New Zealand. The Library has a mandate to
collect, preserve, protect and make accessible its collections for
all the people of New Zealand in a manner consistent with their
status as documentary heritage and taonga.

The Book and Paper Conservator will work with a Senior Conservator
to provide specialist book and paper conservation services for
heritage collections including rare books, albums, atlases, bound
manuscripts and published collections including newspapers and
serials.

The successful applicant will have a recognised qualification in
conservation or equivalent training and a minimum of two years
practical professional experience as a conservator of books and
bound formats.

You will need to demonstrate:

    A strong understanding of the technical issues and factors that
    impact the preservation of paper and bound materials

    Knowledge of the structure of books and the history of the book
    as a physical artefact

    Excellent skills in carrying out book and paper conservation
    treatments

    The ability to think innovatively when managing projects related
    to the preservation of collections in bound formats.

    Ability to work as a member of a team

    Excellent oral and written communication skills

    An understanding of and experience in project planning

    Familiarity with computer systems and software

    Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
