Subject: Panel painting
In the process of examining a panel painting recently, I have discovered a wax seal on the back (panel painting, possibly sixteenth or seventeenth century Italian). The heraldry contains: a hat (cappello romano or saturno worn by bishops and cardinals), rope (with 12 tassels coming off which is likely to mean Bishop), an eagle and a cherub. The legend refers to Saints Nazarius and Celsus, but the rest is in a mixture of Latin, French and Spanish. There is a corresponding panel mark with two "SS" with a chalice in between. I am looking for someone who might help me decipher it and I would be happy to send an image.
