Although beautiful to look at and interesting to reproduce endbands
have much more to tell about their provenance, their evolution,
their purpose and their relation with other crafts.

The aim of this 5-day practical course is to demonstrate and clarify
the characteristics of endbands in the context of binding structures
of the Eastern Mediterranean with special focus in the Byzantine
tradition. An introductory lecture will explain their evolution in
time and place, their classification and terminology, their
structural and decorative features as well as their relation to the
weaving techniques.

Starting with the simplest forms and ending with the most elaborate
woven ones the aim is to reproduce between 10 to 12 different
endbands, both simple and compound, all of them copying historical
examples of the 10th-17th century with a historical background
provided for each of them.

Dr Georgios Boudalis is working as a book conservator at the Museum
of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki. His PhD focused on the
evolution of binding structures in Greek-Orthodox monasteries in the
post-Byzantine period. He has been a team leader and participant in
various assessment visits in the context of the St Catherine's
Library Conservation project in Sinai. His main research interest is
the history of bookbinding techniques in the Eastern Mediterranean
basin.

This course is addressed to both book conservators and bookbinders.
It is rather intensive and people attending are expected to have at
least a basic practical knowledge of endbanding.

The course language will be English. The deadline for application is
one month before the course starts. The course fee plus
accommodation (4 nights in a guest house which is in the same place
as the course) is 480,00Euro plus 10% VAT. Extra material costs
might be required. For a bit higher price we can also reserve you a
room in a hotel. The number of participants is restricted to 12.

The venue is the Renaissance castle housing the European Research
Centre for Book and Paper Conservation-Restoration. Accommodation
during the course is within the building and is included in the
price.
