From: Tobit Curteis <tc<-at->
Date: Tuesday, November 20, 2012
Environmental investigation internship
(part of Wall-paintings Conservation Project)
The Painted Hall
Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich

20 days Internship between January and June 2013

Supervisor: TBC

Educational Stipend of: UKP60.00 per day

The Old Royal Naval College site as a whole has a fascinating and
complex history closely bound up with key national historic events
and stories including the Glorious Revolution, naval supremacy and
patriotism, the expansion of Empire, trade and global connections.
The Painted Hall is one of the country's most important painted
interiors, comparable in scale to that of the main hall in the
Banqueting House, which was painted by Rubens in 1636. This
internship offers invaluable experience of working in a major
institution, supporting the work of an environmental consultant, and
learning about environmental investigation and preventive
conservation of a major site.

Over this period, the intern will have the opportunity--under
appropriate supervision--to participate in the environmental survey
and monitoring activities and will also be expected to communicate
with the public on an informal basis when on-site, to deepen their
understanding of the work. In addition the intern will be invited to
contribute to a blog documenting the project on the website of the
Old Royal Naval College. Appropriate training will be given
(including sessions on speaking to the public, historic background
of the west wall) will be given.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate expertise and
experience within the field of environmental management along with
good learning skills, and the desire to communicate to the public
and the ability to work effectively both alone and as part of a
team.

Candidates need to have recently obtained an appropriate
conservation qualification and demonstrate a broad understanding of
the role of environmental control in the preventive conservation of
historic buildings.

Closing date: 14 December 2012
Interviews will be held in January 2013--date to be advised.
