Security systems for historic house

We recently have been hit with large reductions in staff and are now
looking at installing security alarms in several rooms in our
historic house to prevent people from crossing over the stanchions
to touch or steal objects during operating hours. Any suggestions on
type of system to install, or recommendations as to which company to
go with? Canadian suppliers would be preferred if possible.
