Collections Assistant, Storage Compression Project Science Museum UKP16,000 per annum pro rata Three posts: 12 week fixed-term contract (Reference: CA-SCP Oct12) The Science Museum is seeking three flexible and enthusiastic collections assistants to work alongside other conservation and collections care, museum and project colleagues as part of the Blythe House storage compression project. The Storage Compression Project will enable the compacting, and rationalising where possible, of the collections stored at Blythe House. It will ensure that the objects are stored in an environment appropriate to their needs, create an effective use of space, improve security and allow for storage furniture improvements. A large scale programme of gallery and store decants are being progressed and so space is needed to store the decanted and reserve collections to continue to make the objects accessible for study and research. The position of Collections Assistant will be based at Blythe House, the small to medium objects store of the Science Museum with occasional need to work at either the storage buildings at Science Museum Wroughton or South Kensington site, as required. You will have experience of working in the museum, heritage sector or similar environment, and have practical and relevant experience of object handling and movement in line with established professional standards and protocols. You will be IT literate and have experience of using databases, cataloguing and data entry. You will plan, undertake and communicate the safe handling and movement of a wide range of materials, sizes, hazards and object conditions which may be either palletised or moved individually using a variety of lifting and manual handling equipment.
