Preventive Conservation A hands-on study experience January 18-February 1, 2013 Ossabaw Island, Georgia Organized and led by David Bayne <URL:http://www.conservation-us.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=page.viewpage&pageid=1656> Deadline: November 12 This program is made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and by funds from the FAIC Endowment for Professional Development. This is a unique opportunity to study and apply preventive conservation techniques in a historic house on a wilderness barrier island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. Six participants will join project leaders for this in-depth experience at the Torrey West House on Ossabaw Island. The island is reachable only by chartered boat, and participants will bring supplies and food from the mainland. There is no registration fee. The six selected participants will provide their own round trip transportation to Savannah, Georgia and food for meals. Each participant will receive a $300 stipend toward these expenses. The Ossabaw Island Foundation and FAIC will provide boat transportation to the island, hotel lodging in Savannah on the night of Friday, January 18, 2013 and lodging January 19-31, 2013 in the historic "Clubhouse" maintained by the Foundation. The group will return to Savannah on Thursday, February 1, 2013. To apply, please send a detailed letter describing your interest in preventive conservation and a resume or c.v. About the Instructors and Project Leaders: David Bayne is a conservator with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP), Bureau of Historic Sites at Peeble Island. He organized and taught for last year's "Preventive Conservation" project. He is is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. Michele Phillips is a Paper Conservator at NYSOPRHP, Bureau of Historic Sites. Ms. Phillips is a graduate of the MAC program at Queen's University Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and a conservator of paper and photographic materials. Over her career in both private and institution-based conservation she has worked with a diversity of library, archive and fine art collections with a special emphasis on mold remediation. Michele currently serves as Board Chair of Museumwise, a state-wide museum service organization and is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. Emily Schuetz Stryker is in her third year of the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation (WUDPAC), specializing in textile conservation with an additional concentration in preventive conservation. She is currently spending her third year internship at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
