2013 Professional development courses in Historic Photograph Preservation and Conservation The Centre for Photographic Conservation 233 Stanstead Road London SE23 1HU England +44 20 8690 3678 cphotoconservation<-at->cpc-moor<.>com The Centre will offer career and professional development courses and workshops from February to August 2013 on aspects of the preservation and conservation of historic photographs. The Centre offers conservators and other heritage professionals, specialist training in this challenging field. Preservation and Conservation of Photographic Materials Ref: 100/1 13 May - 28 June 2013 A seven-week Certificated career and professional development foundational course for experienced conservators and conservation students. Preventive Conservation of Photographic Materials (Theory) Ref: 100/2 11-14 February 2013 or 22-25 April 2013 An intensive four-day course covering the identification, causes of degradation, conservation treatment options, handling, usage, exhibition and storage of photographic materials. Identification of Historic Photographic Processes Ref: 100/4 18-21 February 2013 or 20-23 May 2013 A four-day in-depth examination of the process and visual material and degradation characteristics necessary for the identification of historic photographic processes. Master Class I: Advanced Photographic Conservation Techniques Ref 100/5 8 July - 2 August 2013 An intensive four-week workshop for experienced conservators introducing advanced practical skills and current knowledge and developments in the preservation and conservation of paper based photographic images. Preference will be given to past participants of The Centre's foundational "Certificated" course. (Ref: 100/1). Rediscovering Historic Photographic Processes Ref: 100/7 15-19 April 2013 or 13-17 May 2013 A five-day practical workshop providing the opportunity to relive the excitement experienced by the pioneers of photography combined with a user friendly grounding in photo-chemistry. Participants will develop further their aesthetic appreciation of early photography, increase their understanding of photo-chemistry and acquire the manipulative skills needed to produce historic photographic processes including the photogenic drawing, calotype, salted paper print, direct positive, cyanotype and the albumen print. Each participant produces a portfolio of unique images utilising each process undertaken. Master Class II: Going Deeper Ref: 100/5A 14 January - 8 February 2013 In response to requests from previous Master Class I participants to go deeper, this four-week practical workshop is for experienced conservators to further develop advanced hands-on skills, knowledge and experience in the interventive conservation treatment of paper based photographic images. Preference will be given to past participants of The Centre's Master Class I (Ref 100/5). Suppressed Storage Environments, Systems and Materials for Photographic Albums, Prints, Glass and Plastic Negatives and Positives including Colour. Ref: 100/17 2-4 April 2013 This three-day course is aimed at heritage professionals with a responsibility for the care, usage and extended-term preservation of photographic collections. Given the current economic climate with its limitations on both monetary and human resources the need to address the needs of collections as a whole is paramount; utilising available resources to maximum effect. Given the material diversity of photographic processes within collections there is the added confusion as to which storage materials and systems, and which environment; a common environment or mixed environments, should we use? This course will aim to pull together all available knowledge and address the needs of photography with a view to imparting clear guidelines on the choice of storage materials, systems and environments including suppressed temperature and relative humidity storage. Preservation and Conservation of Albums and Photographically Illustrated Printed Books Ref: 100/9 18-20 March 2013 A three-day course looking at the development, history, design, structure, materials, use, handling and the preservation and conservation treatment of photographic albums, photographically illustrated printed books and photographically illustrated books. The course is structured for all heritage professionals with the responsibility care and conservation of these diverse, vulnerable and problematic artefacts. Class sizes are small all participants receive a Handbook containing notes and other related information.
