The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum is seeking
applicants for the full-time permanent position of Senior Textile
Conservator.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Conservation, the Senior
Textile Conservator will be responsible for the conservation and
preservation of the Museum's comprehensive collection of over 25,000
textiles, costumes, and costume accessories housed in the Museum's
facilities in New York City and Newark, New Jersey.  The conservator
will work predominantly independently on a full range of textile
conservation treatments.  Responsibilities will include examination,
preparation, and installation of textiles for exhibitions and loans,
maintenance of conservation records and images, development and
fabrication of custom storage containers, monitoring of
environmental conditions in storage and on exhibition, responding to
public inquiries, and working with the Head of Conservation and
Curators in the Textile Department on research projects.

Qualifications:  Mid-career, senior textile conservator with
demonstrated knowledge of general conservation principles for a
broad range of media; knowledge of museum practices and principles;
high level of manual skills for handling delicate materials;
demonstrated experience in textile conservation techniques,
including, wet-cleaning, mounting, preparation of textiles for
storage and exhibition, and fiber identification;  ability to use
specialized equipment, including microscopes, colorimeter, pH meter,
illuminance meter, UV radiometer, hygrothermograph, and photography
equipment; computer proficiency (both Mac and PC); ability to
communicate successfully with other museum departments and with the
public; and knowledge of safe laboratory working procedures.
Familiarity with The Museum System (TMS) is desirable.

Salary: Federal salary Grade 11. The Smithsonian Institution is an
