Subject: Fellowship at University of Oslo
PhD Research Fellowship in the development of bio-inspired materials for the preservation of archaeological wood Museum of Cultural History University of Oslo A position as PhD Research fellow is available at the Museum of Cultural History. The museum is part of the University of Oslo and houses one of the most important archaeological collections in Norway, including the Oseberg find which represents the most comprehensive collection of Viking Age wooden objects in the world. In order to develop a preservation strategy for the alum-conserved wooden objects of the Oseberg find, the museum launched the research project Saving Oseberg. Connected to Saving Oseberg is a project on the development of new materials for the consolidation of archaeological wood.Within this framework, the PhD fellow will develop techniques to make lignin and lignin-like compounds applicable as wood consolidants. This includes ab initio synthesis starting with the initial alcoholic components as well as the use of industrial lignin. In a later stage, composite materials and the use of nanoparticles shall also be considered. Various analytical methods including imaging and synchrotron/neutron based techniques shall be used to monitor the impregnation of wood samples. The PhD project will be carried out in co-operation with the Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo, and the Norwegian Forestry Research Institute. The fellowship should not start later than March 1, 2013. Application deadline is 25 November, 2012.
