The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks a full-time Assistant
Paintings Conservator to fill a term position (with full-time
benefits) ending June 30, 2013. The position may be renewed annually
on July 1st of each year.

Under the direction of the lab head:

Undertake conservation and treatment of paintings in the American
and European collections. Work will involve all facets of
conservation, including a range of treatments from remedial to
in-depth. Preparation of objects for installation, loan, and
exhibition will be a significant portion of the workload and a
willingness to travel in the execution of courier duties is
essential. The ability to work productively as part of a team is
equally important.

Essential Functions:

     Under direction of supervisor, determine need for conservation,
     and clean, conserve and treat objects.

     Perform technical and some scientific analysis as needed to
     help determine method of manufacture, material structure,
     deterioration, dating, authenticity and past conservation work.

     Document conservation work in writing and through photography.

     Assist in preparing condition reports for exhibitions and
     loans.

     Travel, courier and install exhibitions.

     Work with conservators, collections care staff, registrars, and
     curators on all aspects of transport, analysis, storage,
     installation and display of objects.

     Perform supervised research in the field of conservation and
     art history, and may be asked to contribute to reports and
     scholarly articles and work with or respond to inquiries from
     other departments, museums, consultants, scholars, vendors and
     the public.

     Keep abreast of developments in the conservation field via
     journals, abstracts and attendance at conferences.

Qualifications:

    Applicants should have a Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) with a
    specialization in paintings conservation from a recognized
    conservation training program.

    At least two years of post-training experience is strongly
    preferred.

    Strong hand skills and excellent written and communication
    skills are essential.
