Representative Job Summary: Yale University librarians work in
libraries across the Central, West, Medical, and Science campuses,
to build, manage, and provide access to a rich and unique record of
human thought and creativity. They demonstrate flexibility,
creativity, and imagination in their work and adapt to and help
shape a continuously evolving work environment. Yale librarians
provide consistently high quality service to the University, and
help meet the needs of the local, national, and international
teaching and research communities.

Departmental Focus: Under the general direction of the Chief
Conservator manages and executes conservation treatments to
preserve, protect, and guarantee the survival and future
accessibility of artistic, cultural objects in accordance with an
accepted, professional ethical code, such as the American Institute
for Conservation's Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice

Representative Responsibilities:

    The Librarian 1 is the beginning rank and is expected to
    demonstrate excellence in meeting the position responsibilities,
    as defined by the job description and annual goals.

    Begin to fulfill the criteria for service to the library,
    university, and/or community.

    Begin to fulfill the criteria for professional contributions.

Departmental Responsibilities:

    Plans, researches, and implements conservation treatments for
    rare books, manuscripts and other related materials from the
    Library's special collections and archives. Examines the
    material composition and deterioration of objects in order to
    develop and execute successful conservation treatments.

    Engages cooperatively with curators, librarians, archivists and
    collection managers to provide reliable information regarding
    condition, potential risks, and options for treatment for
    individual objects and groups of objects.

    Makes recommendations and devises or adapts treatment methods,
    with respect to an object's value, meaning, collection context,
    and anticipated use.

    Creates accurate written and photographic documentation for
    examinations, treatments and other activities.

    Undertakes, in consultation with experienced conservators,
    item-level condition surveys and assists with planning
    strategies for improvements to collection care.

    Establishes a record of service to the Library, campus, and the
    community and participates in professional organizations.

    Advances knowledge, skills, and develops specialization through
    professional development opportunities such as conferences and
    workshops. Keeps current with changes in the field.

    Assists with instruction and supervision of non-exempt staff,
    interns, and student assistants.

    Handles hazardous materials used for treatment in accordance
    with current federal, state, and local regulations and policies.

    Assists with emergency preparedness and disaster response as
    needed.

    Carries out other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience: Master's degree in Library
Science from an American Library Association accredited Library
school. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related
discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS. Appointment to
this rank is limited to two years at which time it is expected that
the individual will develop necessary requirements to meet
expectations of performance at the Librarian 2.

Required Skills and Abilities:

    Master's degree in Art, Museum, Library/Archives Conservation
    and/or related field is required in place of MLS.

    Knowledge of conservation principles for a wide variety of
    materials preservation, and of conservation techniques and
    procedures, as demonstrated through previous experience and a
    portfolio of successful treatments and documentation.

    Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry, material science research
    related to conservation, artist's materials and techniques,
    binding structures, and book/printing history.

    Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
    Ability to work independently and in dynamic teams.

    Excellent visual perception and manual dexterity; strong
    computing and digital photography skills.

Preferred Skills/Abilities:

    Knowledge of organization and administrative policies and
    procedures of libraries and archives.

    Experience working in an academic or research library or museum.
