Subject: Plenderleith Memorial Lecture
Institute of Conservation (Icon) Scotland Group 15th Annual Dr Harold Plenderleith Memorial Lecture "Conservation, Mortality and the Meaning of Life". Glasgow Royal Concert Hall Glasgow 29 November 2012 7pm in time for a 7.15 start Followed by a drinks and sandwiches reception until 10pm Dr. Mark O'Neill Director of Policy and Research, Glasgow Life will give the 15th Annual Plenderleith Lecture. This lecture will explore what the great skill and effort invested in conserving precious objects tell us about the values of Western culture and in particular about how we think about the passage of time and mortality. Our concern for preservation is not universal--other cultures address similar concerns about the brevity of life by celebrating the poignancy of transience. Some practical implications of these reflections for museum conservation will be addressed, using examples from Glasgow Museums, of which Mark O'Neill was Director for ten years, during the refurbishment of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the development of the Zaha Hadid-designed Riverside Museum. Tickets must be booked and paid for in advance by calling Icon on +44 20 3142 6799, or by email to wmorgan<-at->icon<.>org<.>uk Preceding this is the ICON Scotland Group (ISG) General Meeting, open to all ICON members. Please arrive at the Buchanan Suite in the Royal Concert Hall at 5.45pm for a 6pm start.
