Assistant Paintings Conservator Museum of Fine Arts, Boston The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks a full-time Assistant Paintings Conservator to fill a one-year term position beginning January 2013. This term position will have full-time benefits and is scheduled to end on December 31, 2013. Under the general direction of the lab head: Undertake conservation and treatment of modern and contemporary paintings, with emphasis on preventive conservation. Work will involve all facets of conservation, including conservation assessments, remedial treatments, preparation of objects for installation, loan, exhibition, and acquisition, and courier duties. Essential Functions: Determine need for conservation, and clean, conserve and treat objects. Perform technical and some scientific analysis as needed to help determine method of manufacture, material structure, deterioration, dating, authenticity and past conservation work. Document conservation work in writing and through photography. Assist in preparing condition reports for potential and new acquisitions. Work with conservators, collections care staff, registrars, and curators on all aspects of transport, analysis, storage, installation and display of objects. Monitor environmental conditions and stability in storage and exhibition spaces. Travel, courier and install exhibitions. Perform supervised research in the field of conservation and art history, and may be asked to contribute to reports and scholarly articles and work with or respond to inquiries from other departments, museums, consultants, scholars, vendors and the public. Keep abreast of developments in the conservation field via journals, abstracts and attendance at conferences. Qualifications: Applicants should have a Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) with a specialization in paintings conservation from a recognized conservation training program. At least two years of post-training experience is required, preferably in modern and contemporary paintings. Ability to excel in rapidly-paced environment.
