Tender for Painting Conservator Services Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane Dublin City Council 1 Year Fixed Term Contract for Services Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane seeks a painting conservator on a contract for services basis for an initial period of one year with the option of being extended for a further period not exceeding an additional two years at the sole discretion of Dublin City Council. Founded by Sir Hugh Lane in 1908, the gallery holds an internationally acclaimed collection of some 2300 modern and contemporary artworks, including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, stained glass, mixed media, installations and time-based media. The gallery regularly lends works from its collection both nationally and internationally, and the ongoing care and presentation of the collection is critical in securing important artworks for the gallery's own exhibition programme. The gallery's reputation within the international confraternity of Museums and Galleries depends upon its staff and contractors working to the highest professional standards. Project: The gallery requires a painting conservator on a contract for services basis to examine the Permanent Collection and to review existing conservation records with a view to identifying and prioritising paintings for treatment. The successful contractor will agree a conservation treatment programme, in discussion with the Director and the Head of Collections, and will personally undertake these treatments on site, ensuring that the collection is presented and maintained to internationally recognised museum standards. The successful contractor will ensure that the gallery's conservation documentation is up to date, accurate and accessible via the gallery's collections management database. The successful contractor will be highly self-motivated and able to organise their own workload with the minimum of supervision and be able to work independently, or as part of a team. Services Required Reporting to the Director, under the directorate of the Culture, Recreation and Amenity Department, the following services will be required: Condition assessments, surveying and documentation (written and photographic) of the collection to museum standards Conservation of paintings from the Permanent Collection to museum standards, prioritised in discussion with the Director and the Head of Collections. Ordering of conservation materials and equipment as needed to facilitate conservation treatments. Preparation of artworks for loan including advising on suitable packing and transport arrangements. It may be necessary to act as a courier for international loans on occasion. Maintaining clear, accurate, up to date records for artworks assessed, surveyed or treated in appropriate formats including on the gallery's collections management database, The Museum System (TMS) Environmental monitoring and management using the gallery's radio telemetry system and building management system. Preventive conservation Provision of conservation advice to the director, and to architects, engineers and other consultants in relation to building refurbishments and other projects if required. Tenderers must hold a Masters degree or equivalent level professional qualification in painting conservation from a recognised conservation programme and must submit details of at least 5 years' experience working on museum collections of a comparable size and value.
