Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting directly to the Senior
Manager for Preservation and Access, the Associate Conservator
oversees all administrative and conservation activity of the Cahnman
Lab at the Center for Jewish History. This role provides a
comprehensive conservation service for the research collections held
by five partner institutions of the Center for Jewish History,
supporting overall collection care, and digitization efforts.
Partner institutions maintain archival collections composed of a
rich variety of documents, posters, pamphlets, photographs, and
artifacts, as well as a non-circulating library collection, ranging
in date from the 17th century to the 20th. Working closely with
partner institutions, the Associate Conservator undertakes
conservation treatments for paper-based materials and creates custom
protective enclosures for a variety of unique collection material.
The Associate Conservator will follow best practices and standards
for treatments and maintain proper documentation and tracking of all
treatments. The Associate Conservator will carry out condition
surveys on both item and collection level as appropriate and
implement short and long term conservation planning based on
assessment. The Associate Conservator will consider a balance
between preservation and access when communicating treatment options
to archivists, librarians, and curators. The Associate Conservator
is expected to keep current about latest conservation techniques and
practices through research and training. Will supervise enthusiastic
volunteers and interns.

Qualifications:

Required:

    Master's degree from a recognized conservation training program

    Five years consecutive post-graduate work with paper-based
    collections

    Knowledge of preservation theory and standards of conservation
    practice

    Excellent manual skills and demonstrates ability to perform
    conservation treatments as evidenced by presentation of
    conservation portfolio

    Supervisory experience; ability to compile time and cost
    estimates; experience with technology-based management tools

    Good organizational and communication skills

    Ability to work with diverse constituencies and to act as a
    liaison between curators, archivists and administration

Preferred:

    Experience with and/or knowledge of archival theory and practice

    Experience working with archival collections

Term: This position is part time for 3-6 months with expectation of
becoming full time.
