    Caring for the world's knowledge: The British Library is one of
    the greatest research libraries in the world. Our modernisation
    programme ensures that we keep pace with other international
    libraries. We continue to set standards with our integrated
    management of the nation's digital and printed collection.

    The Collection Care department of the British Library, which
    comprises some 55 staff, is responsible for the preservation,
    conservation, storage and security of the collections.

    There are currently 2 fixed term opportunities to work within
    the Conservation department in a team of conservators. One post
    will carry out conservation treatments on a range of book items,
    the other on a range of paper conservation projects. You will
    work with minimal supervision and have the skills and knowledge
    to plan and manage your work to ensure that deadlines are met.
    You must be able to communicate effectively with people at all
    levels, and be able to keep clear, detailed and accurate records
    of all treatments undertaken.

    You need to have either a degree in conservation or equivalent
    knowledge and skills sets, and recent practical hands-on
    experience in conservation of books or paper. A broad knowledge
    of available conservation treatments within the field of book or
    paper conservation together with the ability to diagnose
    conservation problems and to develop and evaluate options for
    solutions. You should also have a high level of manual dexterity
    and the ability to treat fragile and delicate materials,
    together with knowledge of materials chemistry and the
    properties, behaviours and interaction of a wide range of
    organic and inorganic materials.

    The British Library supports PACR accreditation and welcomes
    applications from accredited conservators.

    Caring for the world's knowledge: The British Library leads and
    collaborates in growing the world's knowledge base. We have
    signed a major partnership to make thousands of digitised
    historic documents and ancient manuscripts - relating to
    centuries of history of the Gulf - available online to
    researchers, scholars and the general public across the Gulf
    region and around the world. New posts are available for people
    to help us deliver this exciting new programme.

    The Collection Care department, which comprises some 55 people,

    most diverse research collections in the world.

    a small team, carrying out conservation and preparation
    treatments on a wide range of collection items relating to the
    Gulf region that are being digitised as part of this project.

Preventive Conservation Assistants

    Supporting the Preventive Conservation Team, you will assist
    with pre-digitisation assessments and provide Collection Care
    support to digital projects. You will support other activities
    including dust, pest and environmental monitoring and collection
    care training. You will be responsible for producing and
    circulating the weekly Collection Salvage Rota and maintaining
    the departmental image database.

    You should have a good understanding of preservation principles
    and practices including risk assessment as well as experience
    handling and assessing the condition of a wide range of
    collection items. You'll operate with minimal supervision and
    have the skills and knowledge to plan and manage your work to
    ensure that production deadlines are met. You must be able to
    communicate effectively with people at all levels, and be able
    to keep clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments
    undertaken.
