Islamic Manuscript Association Short Course "Intensive Introduction to Islamic Codicology" University of Cambridge 3-7 September 2012 <URL:http://www.islamicmanuscript.org> The Islamic Manuscript Association, together with the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation, Cambridge University Library, the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre of Islamic Studies and the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge, and Pembroke College, will be running the sixth annual Intensive Introduction to Islamic Codicology course, from 3-7 September 2012 at the University of Cambridge. This intensive five-day course will introduce the study of Islamic manuscript codices as physical objects. Daily illustrated lectures will provide an overview of writing supports, the structure of quires, ruling and page layout, bookbinding, ornamentation, tools and materials used in book making, modern scientific analytical techniques, and the paleography of book hands. The lectures-only option comprises morning lectures from 9am-12:30pm at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. These will be delivered by Professor Francois Deroche, director of studies at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris and author of the book Islamic Codicology: An Introduction to the Study of Manuscripts in Arabic Script. For further information regarding the content of the morning lectures please see <URL:http://www.islamicmanuscript.org/training/2012CodicologyShortCourse/CourseProgramme1.html> Evening lectures will take place at from 7:30-9:30pm in the Nihon Room, Pembroke College, Cambridge, and will be delivered by a number of scholars and professionals working with manuscripts, including Anita Chowdry Independent artist and educator in the history of Islamic manuscript painting and related technologies Faustina Doufikar-Aerts Assistant Professor at Gutenberg University, Mainz Kristine Rose Assistant Keeper and Conservator Department of Manuscripts and Printed Books, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and others TBD. The prices for attending the lecture course are UKP195 for members of the Islamic Manuscript Association and UKP215 for non-members. Options for attending ad hoc lectures are also available: one full day's attendance at the lectures is priced at UKP40 for members and UKP50 for non-members. Attendance at a single morning or evening lecture costs UKP20 for members and UKP25 for non-members.
