The Petrie Museum is one of the greatest collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology in the world. The Grant Museum of Zoology houses skeletons, mounted animals and specimens preserved in fluid, including some of the rarest specimens in the world and the UCL Art Museum operates as a study centre and has a programme of temporary exhibitions. Other collections are used for heavily in teaching and research, and include the Geology, Archaeology, Ethnography, Bio-anthropology, Pathological, Anatomy and Historical Scientific collections. Our department works across the university to ensure that these collections are safe and accessible for teaching and research, and also to plan for their future needs. Duties and Responsibilities: We are seeking a dynamic Conservator to care for and conserve the pathological, medical, anatomical and zoological collections. You will be responsible for working with fluid preserved specimens in particular but also for skeletal and entomological material and taxidermy specimens. You will work across UCL, undertaking assessments of specimens, condition checks, planning and carrying out treatment in liaison with the Senior Conservator and UCL curators. Work will include undertaking rolling programmes of collections care and upgrading storage, alongside treating objects for display, loans and teaching. Alongside strategic projects, there will be an element of reactive work. Day to day work could include topping up of fluids, fixing articulated specimens or rehydration of desiccated specimens. You will be working with specimens housed in perspex or glass using a range of fluids from IMS to Kieserling. The Conservator will also work with the Senior Conservator and the Head of Collections Management to provide collections care support across the collections. Key requirements: We are looking for an enthusiastic, practical individual with good hand skills; who is able to work independently. You will need a degree in conservation or relevant knowledge and experience in a similar environment, plus experience of working directly with museum or medical collections in a laboratory context. Applicants should be willing to work additional hours in the week if needed. We anticipate that training may be required to expand experience in line with the job and the range of collections to care for so opportunities to learn new techniques will be provided.
