Consolidating graphite on paper

Has anyone worked recently on consolidating or fixing pencil
markings on paper? This is in relation to an entire manuscript
(nineteenth century) written in pencil rather than a single leaf
artwork. Some work was done looking into various fixatives many
years ago but I would like to hear from people who have either
carried out this kind of work recently, and details of their
experience, or equally importantly those who have been faced with
such issues and have decided not to treat.
