Subject: Training program at International Conservation Centre, Acre
Practical conservation training in Acre, Israel "Saving the Stones", based in historic Acre, Israel, is an English-taught five month training program in conservation and historic preservation for students and young professionals from around the world. The program provides hands-on experience in conservation and restoration of historic sites. Held at the campus of the International Conservation Center in the inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Acre, Saving the Stones is run in partnership with the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Israel National Committee to UNESCO. Acre is a historic port city on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, and is home to remains of world cultures including the Hellenistic, Roman, Mamluk, Crusaders, Ottoman Empire, and the British Mandate. The program includes three intensive months of conservation and historic preservation studies (theoretical and practical) in Acre, one month of conservation in Jerusalem (in David's Tomb and the Western Wall's Tunnels) and one month of a final personal research or practical project in Acre, during which the knowledge acquired on the program is applied. Throughout their training, students work alongside conservation specialists, archeologists, and architects of the highest professional and academic level. Coupled with study tours to sites throughout Israel, and local cultural and social activities, Saving the Stones is the perfect opportunity for someone interested in learning more about the heritage preservation as well as the Land of Israel and the historic civilizations that influenced the development of this land. Generous grants are provided, according to eligibility, by MASA Israel Journey and the International Conservation Center. The upcoming session commences in October, 2012 and there limited spaces still available.
