HMC13:
3rd Historic Mortars Conference

Glasgow, Scotland
September 11-14, 2013

The University of the West of Scotland is pleased to announce the
3rd Historic Mortars Conference, HMC13, will be held in Glasgow, at
the historic Mitchell Library, Wednesday-Friday 11-13 September 2013
with optional excursions on Saturday 14 September, 2012.

The previous events in Lisbon (2008) and Prague (2010) were highly
successful, attracting nearly 200 participants and almost 150 papers
each with accompanying oral and poster presentations. The events
provide a forum for exchange and dialogue between those with diverse
interests in the understanding of historic mortars and masonry,
building conservation and Archaeometry.

Themes:

Contributions and expressions of interest are invited on any aspect
of the understanding of historic mortars and historic masonry, from
the compositional to the mechanical, from the applied to the
theoretical and philosophical, and from archaeology to building
conservation. We will be happy to consider suggestions for subject
specific sessions. We are particularly interested in:

Exploring and strengthening the link between real world,
practical applications and research, both applied and
    fundamental

How changing understanding of materiality affects philosophies
of conservation and practical interventions -understanding new
materials and applications, particularly those emanating from
industry to assess the private sector role in conservation

    New advanced characterisation techniques

in addition to characterisation, the experimental and in-situ
assessment of mortars and masonry and the development of mortars,
renders and grouts for repair.

In the pursuit of the link with the practical and applied, we have
developed a co-publicising relationship with the Building Limes
Forum Ireland, who will host the BLF annual meeting in Dublin in
September 2013, in order to encourage cross attendance at both
events.

Send an abstract or/and an expression of interest in attending or
organising a session to John Hughes at john.hughes<-at->uws<.>ac<.>uk in the
first instance by 1 October 2012.
