Subject: Workshop on plastics
Workshop "Care of Plastic Artifacts" The Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies September 27-29, 2012 The tuition is $860 and includes lodging and most meals. Partial scholarships may be available. The workshop is being taught Julia Fenn, Objects Conservator at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. This intense three day course offers the most recent developments for preserving plastic artifacts which are part of museum collections. The focus will be on recognizing aggressive plastics such as ebonite, developing strategies for protecting vulnerable collections against corrosive plastics and increasing the displayable life of inherently unstable plastics while safely managing those which are already degrading. Afternoon laboratories will provide practice in simple, non-destructive methods for identifying potentially acidic, flammable or toxic plastics as well as suitable polymers for storage.
