Assistant Photograph Conservator Paper Conservation Laboratory Conservation Center Los Angeles County Museum of Art The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is seeking a full-time, photograph conservator to work within the paper conservation laboratory. The conservator will participate in all departmental activities including documentation, analysis and treatment for the photographic collection and will assist with paper related projects in the conservation lab as work load and deadlines necessitate. The photographic collection: The Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at LACMA has holdings of more than fifteen thousand works that span the period from the mediums invention in1839 to the present. In addition, to gelatin-silver prints and chromogenic-development prints, the collection includes examples of nineteenth-century cased images; twentieth-century experimental processes; contemporary color images; and images that are created, manipulated and/or printed digitally. Essential duties and responsibilities: The applicant will perform comprehensive treatments on a wide variety of photographic materials and advise on the loan and exhibition of the collections including the preparation of condition reports. The candidate will also participate in condition surveys and need assessments for the collection and assist with rehousing projects. The candidate should demonstrate knowledge of the history of photography, the evolution of historic and contemporary photography, and have expertise in the analysis and use of non-destructive analytical examination for all types of photographic materials. Other duties may include serving as a courier for works of art on loan, supervising interns, fellows and volunteers, environmental monitoring and routine lab maintenance. Minimum requirements: The candidate should have a Master's degree from a recognized conservation training program with a specialization in photographic materials or a comparable combination of professional training. Experience with the conservation of works on paper will also be considered as part of qualifications. Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, demonstrating an ability to work in a group environment are preferred. Other required skills include: computer proficiency, strong organizational abilities and knowledge of preservation theory and standards of conservation practice.
