Project Conservator Boston Athenaeum The Boston Athenaeum seeks a Project Conservator to perform conservation treatments on bound and unbound paper-based materials as part of a grant-funded initiative to digitize rare books and archival documents printed in the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. The Project Conservator reports to the Associate Director for Digital Programs and Preservation. This 35 hour full-time position, with benefits, is a one year term appointment. Responsibilities: Execute structural and aesthetic conservation treatments on bound and unbound special collections materials, including rare books, maps, manuscripts, pamphlets, broadsides, and serials Exercise a high degree of judgment in applying established conservation principles and procedures Organize project workflow and collaborate with digital programs staff members to ensure the safe handling of fragile materials during imaging Document treatments of rare materials with full written and photographic documentation, in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works Perform related duties as assigned Qualifications: Education: Graduate degree or professional training in the conservation of books and archival documents, or equivalent experience Experience: Working knowledge of conservation theory and practice, historical book structures, and the deterioration and conservation of paper-based materials Demonstrated success performing single-item conservation treatments on both bound and unbound special collections materials Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and judgment in planning and carrying out conservation functions Salary: $47,000 with benefits For further information see <URL:http://www.bostonathenaeum.org/node/39> E-mail resume and cover letter to hr<-at->bostonathenaeum<.>org.
