Objects Conservator
Utah Museum of Fine Arts

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is seeking an objects conservator to be
the primary responsible for the physical care of the museum
collection. The successful applicant will develop and implement
standards for the preservation of museum objects in storage, in
transit, and on exhibition. Will manage conservation for the museum
including the development of its preventive conservation program and
the undertaking of conservation treatments.

Responsibilities: The Conservator conducts general and
object-specific condition assessments and establishes conservation
treatment priorities in a wide variety of collections including
paintings, works on paper, textiles, metal, ceramic, and wooden
objects. He/she is responsible for setting standards and developing
formats for all aspects of documenting the condition of museum
objects.

The Conservator proposes and performs conservation treatments that
are within the capabilities of the museum's facility and in keeping
with the AIC Code of Ethics. He/she oversees the conservation
treatment of museum objects performed by outside contractors.

The Conservator advocates for and provides technical advice for the
preservation measures to improve the care, handling, and environment
for museum collections; as well as overseeing the monitoring and
analysis of environmental conditions, and integrated pest management
in the museum. He/she works in collaboration with the Collections
Manager in developing standards and technical solutions to improve
the storage conditions of specific types of objects.

The Conservator is responsible for preservation planning for
exhibitions including: environmental controls, materials,
maintenance, and general design requirements. He/she evaluates and
recommends objects for inclusion in exhibitions based on condition,
intended use, and other criteria applicable to object preservation,
and takes the leading role in the design and fabrication of
exhibitions mounts.

He/she is responsible for collections related aspects of the
museum's emergency plan and provides training to museum staff on:
disaster preparedness, salvage, and recovery. The Conservator also
provides training and supervision for: part-time, intern, volunteer,
and work-study staff.

Qualifications

    Master of Arts degree in conservation with a specialization in
    objects and a broader understanding of the treatment of a wide
    range of materials.

    Practical knowledge and interest in preventive conservation in a
    museum setting including storage mounts, environmental
    monitoring, and pest management preferred.

    Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills
    are required in order to effectively work with volunteers,
    employees, and the public.

    Experience supervising, teaching and training others is also
    required

    Exhibition mount making training desirable
