Moving Image Preservation Specialist
New York University Libraries

NYU Libraries has a well-established moving image and audio
preservation program with three labs: a motion picture film lab, a
video lab and an audio lab.  Moving image and sound collections at
NYU Libraries are recorded on a variety of motion picture film,
video and audio formats and are primarily held in the Tamiment Labor
and History collections, the Fales' Downtown collections and the
University Archives.

The Preservation Department of NYU Libraries seeks an experienced
individual to manage the moving image and sound preservation
program. The program comprises a suite of in-house activities that
include appraisal, format identification, condition assessment,
cleaning, re-housing, and preservation re-mastering for motion
picture film, video and sound recordings. Re-mastering activities
include in-house and outsourced services to produce high quality
digital master files, mezzanine files and use copies.

The moving image preservation specialist assists in the development
of preservation goals and objectives, procedures, and policies for
moving image and sound materials. S/he evaluates collections to
assess preservation needs and collaborates with curators in setting
priorities and arranging treatment and processing schedules. The
specialist implements standard procedures for handling, examining,
describing, and assessing moving image and sound collections;
ensures adherence to established access, storage, and handling
policies for these materials; manages workflow for media transfers,
including preservation re-mastering operations to meet preservation
standards; communicates with vendors for outside services needed;
and manages day-to-day activities of an active media preservation
program.  In administering the program, the specialist trains and
supervises two full-time staff and two FTE part-time graduate
assistants. In addition, the moving image preservation specialist
assists in grant-related proposals and programs for media
preservation as needed.

 The moving image preservation specialist position is a permanent
professional appointment and reports to the head of the Libraries'
Barbara Goldsmith Preservation and Conservation Department.  NYU
seeks an individual who is active in professional organizations and
who enjoys participation in the professional community of moving
image and sound preservation.

Qualifications: Master's degree in Film or Cinema Studies. Formal
training in moving image and sound technologies and preservation, or
equivalent experience. Practical experience in moving image
archiving and preservation of legacy formats, including knowledge of
the recommended practices and guidelines for archival storage for
all formats and best practices for re-mastering and transfer of
moving images and sound recordings.

Applicants must have demonstrated professional accomplishments and a
minimum of three years professional responsibility for a moving
image and sound preservation program. Requirements include:
experience implementing nationally recognized guidelines for
archival re-mastering and transfer of analog moving image and sound
materials; developing, designing and carrying out audiovisual
collection assessments; implementing recommended practices for the
care, handling and storage of audio, video and motion picture film
materials; strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to
work independently and productively in a fluid, complex
organization; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and
in writing.

Experience must include a minimum of two years' supervising staff.
