Icon Conference 2013

"Positive Futures in an Uncertain World"
University of Glasgow, Scotland
April 10-12, 2013

In partnership with the University of Glasgow

Icon's second triennial conference will inspire conservation
professionals and all those working in the increasingly challenging
and uncertain circumstances of today's heritage sector. We will
aspire to build Positive Futures for the cultural heritage and the
profession. In spite of funding cuts and staff losses, conservators
are working with others to find new ways to care for and connect
with our cultural heritage. The conference will explore and debate
how we can develop our capacity to respond in uncertain times. Some
questions to consider: Keeping conservation relevant

How can conservation engage more effectively with current
agendas (political, social, economic and environmental)?

How can we use social media and new technologies to connect with
    new audiences?

How can we adapt education and training for a sustainable
    profession?

How can we overcome barriers into our profession and how can we
flourish as a profession of the future?

Role of volunteers

Is volunteering reaching out or replacing conservation
    professional expertise?

    Volunteers: experience or exploitation?

Is this a good way of encouraging engagement with conservation?

Creative connections

How can links with other professionals help with future
    challenges?

Can conservation's interdisciplinary approach make it more
    resilient?

    Is partnership a worthwhile investment?

Discipline within the disciplines

Is a materials based approach still relevant? Are traditional
barriers breaking down? What new and relevant disciplines are
    emerging?

The plenary programme provides an overview of key developments in
the field and perspectives from beyond conservation. Concurrent
sessions give opportunities for sharing best practice across
disciplines. Themed sessions will address particular issues of
topical interest, such as careers and emerging professionals. We
welcome abstracts for papers on the inspiring work going on in the
conservation field on these and other topics. Presentations can be
either 10-minute "think pieces" or 20-minutes long. We also welcome
abstracts for posters.

Specialist Group Sessions

In addition to plenary sessions, the following Icon specialist
groups will be hosting sessions at the conference. The themes of the
group sessions and other information will be advertised as they
become available. Each Group will be organizing their sessions and a

Bookings open 1 September 2012

Deadline for submission of papers to special conference issue of the
Journal is 28 February 2013.

The Conference will provide a platform for international exchange of
up-to-date developments in conservation of our cultural heritage. It
will also be the essential networking event for conservation and
related professionals in the UK for the next five years. The
conference combines plenary and concurrent sessions with a trade
fair, a welcome reception to be held at the magnificent Hunterian
Museum and a conference dinner with Ceilidh. There will also be
pre-conference tours to the most recent and challenging restoration
projects in the Edinburgh-Glasgow area.

The conference venue is within the historic University of Glasgow.
The plenary sessions will be held in the magnificent Bute Hall, a
prime example of High Victorian Gothic architecture. The trade fair
will take place in the adjacent and recently restored Hunter Hall.

We look forward to welcoming you to the conference. Booking will
open on 1 September 2012. Please look out for further details at
