Subject: Call for papers--Conference on conservation and restoration in Central Europe during the time of the iron curtain and today
Call for Papers International Conference Separated - reunited!: Conservation and Restoration in Central Europe during the time of the iron curtain and today Hildesheim, Germany 25-28 September 2013 On the occasion of the research project "Preservation of Monuments on Separated and Reunited routes", the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim/Holzminden/Gottingen, in cooperation with ICOMOS and other partners, is planning an international conference from the 25-28 September 2003 in Hildesheim, Germany The Conference focuses on the latest and often neglected chapter in the history of European conservation: the time after 1945 on both sides of the iron curtain. The conference papers will demonstrate the significance of this period for today's heritage assets and for our understanding of history. The identity-giving role of monuments for specific groups of the population, religions and countries as well as the ideological misuse of monuments, shall be an area under discussion. The following topics are planned: Overviews of the history of conservation in Central Europe after 1945: from the perspective of individual countries and regions, also taking into account the political and social situation and the national heritage legislation. Theoretical basis, method and practice of conservation and restoration on both sides of the iron curtain. Case studies from conservation and restoration practice. Present-day perception of conservation and restoration measures at the time of the iron curtain: re-restorations, reshaping and re-interpretation vs. appreciation and preservation? Conservation and restoration in social and political context: the ideological appropriation of monuments at the time of the iron curtain and today. We are particularly looking to include speakers from Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The talks are to be held in English or German. An Excursion will be guided to monuments and memorial sites of the late 19th and 20th Century in the Harz Mountains. An important role may be given to fundamental considerations on conservation issues, i.e. the investigation of monuments (historical investigation, research into building technology, examinations and analysis by conservators), the specifications of works, the quality of the practical realisation and how to bring monuments into (new) use. Another point of interest would be the understanding and valuing of the conservation and restoration profession in society. We would like to invite all experts in the above mentioned fields, especially interdisciplinary teams of authors. We are planning a publication of the contributions in the publication series of ICOMOS and the Hornemann Institute for 2014. Please submit an abstract to service<-at->hornemann-institut<.>de no later than 31 August 2012. Abstracts have to be English or German language and 25-30 lines, they will be available on the Hornemann Institute website.
