Sculpture Conservator
Whitney Museum of American Art

The Whitney Museum of American Art seeks a sculpture conservator for
our Collections Documentation Initiative. The Collection
Documentation Initiative (CDI) is a project focused on cataloguing,
researching, photographing, and conducting conservation assessments
of works of art in the Whitney Museum's permanent collection. The
first phase of the project concentrated on works of art on paper.
The sculpture portion of the second phase will begin in November
2012.

The conservator will work alongside staff from other departments as
we survey and document our entire collection of sculptures. The
project will take place at the museum's storage facility in
Manhattan. Duties will include: creating a full description of each
sculpture with regard to the materials of its fabrication,
generating a condition report of its current state, and working with
the cataloguer to ensure that object-specific information is
accurate, as well as advising on proper handling and housing of
specific works.

Requirements: M.A. in Art Conservation, or equivalent training with
a specialization in sculpture or objects conservation; knowledge of
current standards of practice and methodology for the examination of
sculpture; familiarity with and interest in 20th and 21st century
artists' materials and techniques; demonstrated organizational and
writing skills; familiarity with the TMS collection management
system; and the ability to develop and maintain collegial and
collaborative relationships with other project staff.
