Conservation Technicians
National Museum of African American History and Culture

Full time equivalent, 12-month contract appointments

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and
Culture is scheduled to open in late 2015.   At present, the museum
collection contains nearly twenty thousand objects and the
collection holdings represent a wide and diverse variety of
materials and object types, including fine and decorative art
objects, historic furnishings, ethnographic material, historic
documents and manuscripts, historic costumes and textiles, along
with audio and visual media.

The museum is seeking to hire a team of Conservation Technicians who
will assist the conservation staff with the processing and
preparation for storage of collection objects.  The incumbents will
be responsible for providing specialized technical services to the
museum, focusing on the long-term care and preservation of its
collection.

Duties will include: inspecting objects for loss, damage and
evidence of infestation or other pest activity; record objects'
condition via photographic means, and through the preparation of
written condition assessments; working under the guidance of staff
conservators, assist with the identification of treatment
prioritization(s) for objects; working under the guidance of staff
conservators, perform remedial cleaning of objects using a wide
variety of techniques and methods; working under the guidance of
staff conservators, perform minor treatments on objects for purposes
of stabilization and/or exhibition preparation; working under the
guidance of staff conservators and the onsite collection manager,
pack and prepare objects for storage and movement utilizing a
variety of standard and custom housing methods and techniques; and
perform associated duties pertaining to the long-term care and
preservation of the museum's collection.
