Subject: Position at Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
Samuel H. Kress Fellowship in Paintings Conservation The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is pleased to offer a Samuel H. Kress Fellowship in Paintings Conservation for the year beginning in the fall of 2012. The primary project is the treatment, documentation, and technical study of a 7 x 9 foot painting by Julien Dupre from circa 1888, which is currently unexhibitable due to its structural condition as well as aesthetic considerations. The Fellow would be responsible for all aspects of the treatment, from devising the work plan; to coordinating the painting's movement, handling, and documentation; to the execution of the treatment itself. There would be ample opportunity for research on the artist's technique in the context of late 19th century French Realism, as well as the methods used to create large-scale paintings in the Salon tradition and the reuse of motifs in Dupre's paintings. A conference or otherwise publishable paper is expected as a result of the technical investigation. In addition to the study and treatment of the Dupre, the Fellow would be an active participant in the department, attending to minor treatments of paintings going out on loan, undertaking technical examination of other collection paintings, as well as working in a supervisory capacity on projects with our pre-program intern. The Fine Arts Museums are comprised of the de Young Museum, which exhibits its American, Modern and Contemporary, and AOA collections, and the Legion of Honor, which houses the European and Graphic Arts collections. The Paintings Conservation Department is located in a spacious and well-equipped studio at the de Young. In addition to the three paintings conservators and one frame conservator in the Department, the Fellow will regularly interact with the Museums curators, registrars, technicians, and other staff. The Kress award is $28,000 ($32,000 with employer costs) with a supplemental travel stipend. Fellowships are limited to graduates of conservation programs in the U.S. and Canada, or to U.S. citizens graduating from graduate-level conservation programs abroad. A successful candidate should have at least one additional year of post-graduate experience for this Fellowship, and have a significant interest in technical art history in addition to proven treatment skills.
