Description: The supervising conservator oversees and coordinates
all of Historic New England's conservation programs and treatments
for the artifactual collection, both in the collection and
conservation facility and in the house museums, including furniture,
paintings, works-on-paper, decorative arts, and textiles. Works with
the property care team to coordinate the environmental monitoring
program and to establish standards for long-term environmental care
and preservation of collections. This position supervises the
objects conservator and conservation fellows and interns.

Responsibilities: The supervising conservator sets objectives and
work plans for the conservation team and develops and monitors team
and conservation project budgets. Works with the collection services
team to set conservation priorities and treatments for collections.
Assesses conditions of collections within historic house museums, as
well as for new acquisitions and those in storage.  Plans and
implements environmental improvements.  Works with collections staff
in the safe transportation and movement of the collection.
Coordinates and oversees treatment projects using outside
conservators. Participates in the preservation of Historic New
England's collections, and the planning, funding and implementation
of informational programs and conservation treatments to support our
vision.  Works with the team leader for collection services and the
development team to formulate and write grants for improving the
condition of collections, including treatment and preventative care
initiatives, and fellowship support.  Serves as the one of the
public faces of the collection services team to build visibility and
support. Writes articles, presents public programs and represents
the organization in activities in the conservation community and
before the general public.

Qualifications: A master's degree in conservation or equivalent
experience and a minimum of ten years job-related and five years
supervisory experience required.  Requires specialized knowledge of
furniture or object conservation and general knowledge of
preventative care conservation including environmental conditions
appropriate for collections displayed in a historic house museum
setting.  Requires a thorough understanding of the history of
conservation and collection care for art and artifacts exhibited in
a historic house museum. Experience with coordinating conservation
treatments for a diverse array of traveling exhibitions is also
required. Understanding, experience and enthusiasm for engaging the
public in conservation activities at Historic New England through
membership, creative program development and promotion is essential.
Ability to work in cooperation with partners internally and
externally to reach, engage and serve a wide audience of museum and
conservation professionals and the public.
