Project Conservator University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum), an internationally renowned educational and research institution dedicated to the understanding of cultural diversity and the exploration of the history of humankind, is pleased to offer a one-year term-funded position in Objects Conservation beginning in September 2012. This position could be renewable contingent upon available funding. The conservator's work will focus on treatment and rehousing of human mummies and associated funerary goods (coffins, cartonnage, etc) from the Museum's Egyptian collections. The Project Conservator will be responsible for conservation of artifacts from the Museum's Egyptian collections in the context of the Open Conservation Laboratory. The primary duties include treatment of artifacts, researching conservation materials and techniques, providing conservation input with regard to exhibition and storage. Other duties include interaction with the public, maintaining a social media presence, and training docents for tours of the Open Conservation Laboratory. The Project Conservator will be expected to work a Tuesday through Saturday weekly schedule. Qualifications: The candidate must be a graduate of a recognized Masters-level conservation training program with at least three years of professional experience after graduation, preferably in a similar institution. Sound work habits, personal initiative, and organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to undertake moderate to heavy lifting are essential. Candidate will uphold collegial and collaborative working relationships with conservation staff and other departments. Candidate should be comfortable with social media outreach and with regular interaction with the public on both a casual and a more formal basis Compensation is commensurate with qualifications, and will include the Museum's benefits package.
