Subject: Discarding audio tapes
One of our circuit courts is ready to destroy some reel-to-reel tapes that are beyond their retention period. I've been asked if there is a secure and "green" way to dispose of them. I believe he's wondering about an option analogous to what's generally done with paper documents: shredded then recycled. I haven't seen these tapes, so I can't say whether they are polyester or acetate; the archivist reports none of the tell-tale order that would clearly indicate acetate. No one's ever asked me about options for reel-to-reel tape, and I'm hoping some of you may have dealt with this before. I'm all ears.
