30 hours per week (with occasional additional hours for exhibitions)

The Asian Art Museum seeks a skilled individual for an exciting
opportunity to work in an active conservation lab and to learn more
about the conservation of a vast array of art objects in a museum
setting.

The incumbent will assist the professional conservation staff in a
variety of duties related to the preservation and restoration of
works of art, primarily works of art on paper and other substrates.
This part-time position is of fixed-term duration through June 30,
2013.

The nature of this highly skilled work requires manual dexterity,
intense concentration, and aesthetic sensibility in addition to
excellent organizational skills and meticulous work habits.

Examples of Duties

    Prepares materials for treatment including adhesives,
    consolidants, toned papers, toned powders, and Japanese paper
    strips

    Assists with the handling of works of art, including oversized
    and/or weighted objects, and with putting artworks away in
    storage

    Performs basic conservation procedures including consolidation
    and loss compensation

    Carries out mat-cutting, hinging, matting, and framing; assists
    with attachment of other hanging systems

    Checks, calibrates, and changes charts of hygrothermographs

    Organizes supplies and supply storage spaces

    Inspects incoming plants for insects; performs other pest
    management duties

    Photographs objects for treatment; maintains image archives;
    prints images

Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor of Arts degree in Art, Art History, or closely related
    field from a recognized college or university.  One year of
    general chemistry plus one year of organic chemistry preferred

    One year of related experience working with art objects; or an
    equivalent combination of education, training and experience

    Basic knowledge of the equipment, materials, and techniques used
    in the conservation of art objects including photography and
    digital imaging equipment

    Familiarity with Microsoft Word.  Experience with Photoshop and
    Argus Open Edition or other collections management software
    desirable

    Ability to acquire the knowledge and techniques used in the
    conservation of Asian art

    Ability to handle valuable objects, delicate instruments, and
    hazardous materials with extreme care

    Ability to use hand tools and artist's materials

    Ability to follow specific instructions and to work effectively
    with departmental staff

    Good judgment and flexibility

    Ability to lift up to 40 pounds

Compensation: $19-67-23.62/hour with excellent benefits package
