PhD position in Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry
University of Amsterdam

38 hours per week

The Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam in
collaboration with the Faculty of Science of the Utrecht University
and the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam, is
offering a PhD position funded by the NWO Science4Arts Programme.
The candidate will work within the PAinT research project Paint
Alterations in Time. Implications of pigment-binder interactions for
conservation, presentation and storage of oil paintings from Van
Eyck to Mondrian. In this multidisciplinary international project
scientists and paintings conservators from leading museums,
universities and institutions work closely together. The PAinT team
is supported by a broad (inter)national group of experts.

The PAinT team investigates the ageing, deterioration and migration
processes inside mature oil paints related to pigment-binder
interactions. In a combined approach, analysis of paintings from
Dutch museum collections will be linked with scientific experiments
on model systems. The project aims to provide an improved scientific
basis to inform conservation strategies.

Requirements

The successful candidate is a chemist specialized/experienced in
(in)organic synthesis, spectroscopic techniques, and/or mass
spectrometry. He or she has interest to apply science to the field
of cultural heritage. The candidate will focus on the synthesis and
characterization using state of the art analytical techniques of
mature oil paint model systems. In a later stage, these models
systems will be exposed to relevant storage conditions and
conservation treatments to investigate reaction and transport
processes in time. Besides that the candidate should be able and
interested to work in an interdisciplinary team en have the
flexibility to travel and to work in various locations within and
