Working in the Digitization Project Conservation Team the Project
Conservator needs to work efficiently within a dedicated team of
conservators, responsible for assessing and preparing records for
digitization.

Maintaining the balance between the preservation needs of the
collection and the commercial aspects of the project is crucial.

The Project Conservator ensures that all information on the document
can be captured and that damage to documents during scanning is
minimized through appropriate preparation. They may undertake
collection surveys to determine condition and treatment time of
documents. Professional judgment is required to assess documents and
select appropriate treatments and materials, or adapt existing
treatments, while adhering to the ICON code of ethics and
professional standards.

Role and Responsibilities

    Prepare original documents for imaging

    Assess the condition of documents and estimate treatment times

    Make decisions regarding treatments and materials, selecting the
    most appropriate available or adapting existing processes

    Work closely with other teams involved in digitization to
    communicate technical information regarding document condition,
    document handling, and workflow to internal colleagues and
    external commercial partners.

    Carry out treatments and re-housing where necessary

    Work with fragile documents under pressure while maintaining a
    high level of manual dexterity.

    Keep organised records and maintain project documentation as
    required

    Provide on-going practical assistance to the scanning team where
    required

Communicate with external and internal project partners to ensure
document handling standards are upheld.

Person Specification

Essential:

    Graduate from a recognised conservation programme or equivalent
    experience
    A good use of initiative and decision making
    Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member
    of a team
    Ability to work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines
    Ability to plan and prioritise work efficiently to meet targets
    Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    Tact and diplomacy to communication technical information to
    internal colleagues and external commercial partners

Desirable:

    Experience of project work
    Experience of preparing collections for digitization
    Experience of collection surveys and condition assessment
    Experience of working with a variety of materials, including
    parchment
    Experience of liaising with internal and external stakeholders
