Salt dough sculpture

I need to find a way to conserve a 50-year old piece made of salt
dough.  It is the face of a large doll-like figure.  It has been
shrinking, cracking, breaking apart and large salt crystals have
formed in the join edges.  Has anyone had any experience with salt
dough sculpture the can share?
