The course consists of 2 lecture days in Amsterdam (11-12 June 2012)
with an optional, consecutive, 3-day workshop (13-15 June 2012)
close to the Hague (Rijswijk).

Richard Wolbers is a Professor of the Winterthur Program for Art
Conservation of the University of Delaware and has given variations
of this course for many years.

Participants: The course is intended for a maximum of 50
participants for the 2 lecture days, of which a maximum of 19 will
continue with the 3-day workshop. The course is designed for
Conservators faced with cleaning problems on painted or varnished
surfaces.

Overview: During the lecture days, Richard Wolbers will present a
general survey of the theoretical principles needed to evaluate and
formulate tailored aqueous and solvent-based cleaning systems.

Topics include:

    The characterization of surfaces
    An overview of aqueous and solvent techniques
    Chelating/complexing materials
    Thickeners, gels, pastes and poultices
    Resin soaps, enzymes and emulsions

Chemical theory and case studies illustrating the cleaning
techniques will be presented during the two days of lectures for up
to 50 participants. In the 3 following days, a smaller workshop of
maximum 19 of the 50 participants will practice with the materials
introduced, discuss their experiences and explore options.

    2 lecture days: will be held at the Reinwardt Academy in
    Amsterdam

    2 lecture days: Euro 200,-
    5 day course:   Euro 650,-
