Full time, 35 hours per week,
Monday - Friday with occasional evening assignments
Exempt position.

Summary: Reporting to the Vice President for Library Services, the
Director of Conservation Services provides primary leadership for
the Conservation Services Department. The Director plans and directs
the operations of the Conservation Services Department and
supervises its staff.  The Director is responsible for the physical
care and treatment of books, papers, parchment, photographs, and all
other Library materials.

Responsibilities:

    Manage the staff of the Department of Conservation Services

    Manage the full range of library conservation activities

    Manage environmental monitoring and disaster preparedness for
    the collections

    Oversee conservation aspects of exhibit and loan preparations,
    documentations, and treatments

    Oversee conservation aspects of projects and activities (such as
    digitization) that affect care and handling of library materials

    Lead and manage departmental documentation, planning, budgets,
    and assessment

    Manage resources and equipment within the department

    Represent Conservation Services within the Newberry, to the
    library and conservation communities, and to the general public

    Keep abreast of current developments in conservation,
    preservation, and related fields

    Continue the Newberry's leadership role in conservation
    education and development.

    Perform other tasks or activities needed for the achievement of
    departmental goals

Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree required

    Master's degree in Conservation or equivalent work experience
    required

    Knowledge of conservation theory and practice for books and
    papers

    Extensive experience in book and paper conservation in a library
        environment

    Excellent communication and management skills

    Ability to motivate staff and build a well-functioning team

    Previous supervisory experience preferred

    Excellent computer skills
