Subject: Workshop on handmade paper and paper covered bookbinding
Conservation By Design Limited Workshop Handmade paper and paper covered bookbinding 17-21 September 2012 Conservation By Design Limited, for the 6th year running, is set to support an exciting workshop and research project on the principles and practice of handmade papermaking and limp paper covered bookbinding. >From 17-21 September 2012, Jacques Brejoux (papermaker) and Christopher Clarkson (bookbinder), two of the leading scholars and craftsmen in their fields, will host a five day residential workshop for just eight delegates at the 16th century Moulin Du Verger Paper Mill at Puymoyen near Angouleme, located in the Charente (Cognac) region of France. The workshop will look at the particular qualities required of handmade cover papers based on 16th and 17th century exemplars. Using 19th and 20th century linen rags and Jacques' reproduction "Medieval" wooden stampers, specifically built for this purpose, it will allow for direct comparisons to be made with "Hollander" beaten fibres. Conservators and bookbinding professionals will be able to benefit from a rare interchange of shared knowledge and experience to develop a joint understanding of the requirements of Western style papers in the rebinding of period books and archival material. Jacques Brejoux will demonstrate techniques such as fibre identification, pulping, refining, sheet forming, couching and loft drying. He will also share his vast knowledge, and discuss the technical aspects of paper as they relate to book conservation. Christopher Clarkson will use Jacques' cover papers to demonstrate the technical qualities required in a handmade paper for use in period rebinding. His teaching will concentrate on limp paper binding construction of the Renaissance, a passion of his since the 1960s. Scholars will be accommodated and share wonderful meals on the large communal dining table at the lovely Juillaguet Gite run by Michala Marcus and Kent Carter, close friends of Jacques and Nadine. Michala also has a dance studio at Juillaguet and Kent a well known Jazz musician has a recording studio there. It is situated in open countryside with wonderful views and a large terrace to relax with a glass of wine after a hard days work at the mill. Lunches at the mill are also provided by Michala and Kent. These are normally taken outdoors, weather permitting. Arrive a few days early, 14th, 15th and 16th September and you can see the famous "Circuit des Remparts" vintage car racing which takes place in and around the old town centre of Angouleme. <URL:http://www.circuit-des-remparts.com> Those interested in attending the workshop can find out more or book their place by contacting Debbie Fraser on +44 1234 846 306 or go to <URL:http://www.cxdltd.com/home.aspx?pagename=scholarships> For more details on Moulin Du Verger, log on to <URL:http://www.moulinduverger.com> Eve Parkin Account Manager Haslimann Taylor PR +44 121 355 3446 Mobile:+44 7825 382 343 *** Conservation DistList Instance 25:44 Distributed: Monday, April 2, 2012 Message Id: cdl-25-44-021 ***Received on Friday, 30 March, 2012
