This presentation will offer an overview of the various types of natural and synthetic resins used for the manufacture of household paints in the first half of the 20th century, all of which have been used by artists. The types of paints discussed will include natural oleoresinous, nitrocellulose, phenolformaldehyde, oil-modified alkyd, as well as emulsion paints based on vinyl and acrylic resins. The history and properties of each will be discussed, along with examples of their use by artists Harriet Standeven is a freelance conservator specialising the care of modern and contemporary art. She completed her MA in the Conservation of Easel Paintings in 2000 (Northumbria University) and her PhD in 2004 (Royal College of Art); the subject of her Doctoral research was the technical history and use of gloss house paints by twentieth century artists.
