The use of household paints by 20th century artists is well known.
This presentation will offer an overview of the various types of
natural and synthetic resins used for the manufacture of household
paints in the first half of the 20th century, all of which have been
used by artists. The types of paints discussed will include natural
oleoresinous, nitrocellulose, phenolformaldehyde, oil-modified
alkyd, as well as emulsion paints based on vinyl and acrylic resins.
The history and properties of each will be discussed, along with
examples of their use by artists

Harriet Standeven is a freelance conservator specialising the care
of modern and contemporary art. She completed her MA in the
Conservation of Easel Paintings in 2000 (Northumbria University) and
her PhD in 2004 (Royal College of Art); the subject of her Doctoral
research was the technical history and use of gloss house paints by
twentieth century artists. Harriet has continued to research
artists' use of commercial paints, and in 2011 published a book
"House Paints 1900-1960: History and Use" (Getty Conservation
Institute).
